Work with the University of Edinburgh to advance marine energy innovation
The University of Edinburgh brings together more than 50 academics working across the full marine energy system. Through our multidisciplinary expertise, we help companies in the energy sector addressing technical, commercial and operational challenges in wave and tidal energy.
We can support innovation across areas including:
By working with us, your organisation can access leading research expertise, specialist facilities and collaborative opportunities to develop commercially viable solutions for the UK and global markets. Together, we can help make tidal and wave energy more accessible, reliable and sustainable.
IDCORE allows companies to host a dedicated Engineering Doctorate research engineer for a three-year project shaped around your organisation’s needs. This can help you address technical challenges, build capability and deliver measurable impact in the offshore renewable energy sector.
The University of Edinburgh is home to an extensive range of state-of-the-art facilities. Take advantage of these capabilities for physical testing, analysis, characterisation, structural and mechanical testing, non-destructive testing and processing of a wide range of materials and structures.

FastBlade is the world’s first facility to use regenerative hydraulic technology for high-quality, low-cost fatigue testing of tidal blades and other composite structures. It supports research, product development and technology validation.
Originally conceived for academic research into wave and tidal current interactions, FloWave is also a powerful tool for commercial developers. It enables companies to test, optimise and de-risk technologies and projects before committing to fabrication or offshore deployment.
The Wolfson Electrical Power Conversion Laboratory supports the development, testing and scaling of next-generation power conversion equipment. It offers testing services for power conversion and smart grid equipment at powers up to 240 kW and voltages up to 1500 V.
