University spinouts named in Scotland’s top tech startups

07 Sep 2022

Four University of Edinburgh-supported companies have been named in Scotland’s Top 15 Tech Startups in recent analysis by data experts Beauhurst.

The report highlights the top technology startups, in order of the amount of equity investment they’ve raised to date. Spinouts Resolution Therapeutics, Invizius and Kynos Therapeutics were all supported to launch by Edinburgh Innovations, the University’s commercialisation service, while Brainnwave was a close collaborator of the School of Mathematics.

All four of these companies continue to receive support from Edinburgh Innovations via Old College Capital (OCC) – the University‘s venture capital fund.

Scotland’s Silicon Valley

Around 30% of high-growth companies in Scotland are technology companies: developing technology to drive innovation and disrupt markets. Almost 40% of these are based in Edinburgh, says Beauhurst, lending weight to Edinburgh’s emerging title of ‘Scotland’s Silicon Valley’.

Dr John Lonsdale, Head of Enterprise at Edinburgh Innovations, said:

It’s fantastic to see University of Edinburgh companies receiving recognition in this way and contributing to the city’s fast-growing reputation for technological innovation.
Every day, University of Edinburgh researchers are advancing knowledge in a vast range of domains, and Edinburgh Innovations is connecting that knowledge to industry, creating valuable impact. ”

Resolution Therapeutics is developing macrophage cell therapies to treat diseases characterised by life-threatening inflammatory organ damage. Its work builds on the ground-breaking cell therapy research led by Professor Stuart Forbes at the University’s Centre for Regenerative Medicine.

Invizius was spun out by Dr Andy Herbert and his team from the School of Chemistry, to develop a solution for the inflammatory side effects of dialysis that continues to drive poor patient outcomes.

Kynos Therapeutics is developing an innovative portfolio of first-in-class medicines that target uncontrolled inflammation in critical areas of unmet clinical need.

Brainnwave enables customers to access data across different industries and together with their analysis and visualisation platform, provides valuable and relevant intelligence for companies.

Edinburgh Innovations provides a range of support for UoE staff and student entrepreneurs. It also manages OCC, which supports the University’s research, staff and students by investing in high-growth, early-stage businesses associated with the University.
