Low power solution for wireless communication

This low power solution for wireless communication is based on an improved software algorithm method to enhance the performance of wireless communication systems, employing multiple transmit and receive antennas commonly referred to as multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems.

The Trellis Coded Spatial Modulation (TCSM) code will be provided following acceptance of the University’s Open Technology standard terms and conditions.


The technology extends and improves the design of these wireless transmission MIMO systems, which employ ‘Spatial Modulation’ techniques, with the further enhancement of ‘Trellis Coded Modulation’ into the antenna selection process with appropriate receiver decoders. This significantly helps to improve the overall communication system performance in multipath environments thus saving power, cost of manufacture and faster data rates.

More and more applications are being offered in wireless communications with associated challenges that come with them, e.g. battery life, quality and strength of signal, use of multiple antennas at both receiver and transmitter. Current solutions are limited in their ability to increase the spectral efficiency of the signal, require more hardware or do not have spatial multiplexing gain compared to other MIMO techniques.

The algorithm builds on the unique University of Edinburgh ‘trellis coded spatial modulation’ coding scheme that avoids inter-channel interference whilst still allowing the system to benefit from spatial multiplexing gains. The algorithm allows for the physical separation between antennas to be set for maximum performance gain, and negates spatial correlation detrimental effects. The algorithm can be applied to existing 3G and new 4G LTEwireless communications.

The new algorithm requires only one active transmit antenna to achieve an equivalent rate of data transmission to multiple parallel transmissions. The trellis coded part of the technology allows the efficient partitioning of the flow of data from the transmit antenna into sub-sets in such a way that the physical separation between the transmit antennas is maximised.
