Robocean and restoring seagrass meadows

Robocean is a Scottish robotics startup from the University of Edinburgh on a mission to rewild our oceans through industrial‑scale restoration of seagrass meadows.

Seagrass meadows are globally distributed marine ecosystems and true ocean powerhouses: they support rich biodiversity, capture carbon, reduce coastal erosion, and trap marine pollutants. In the last century, Earth has lost roughly a third of its seagrass, and scientific analyses suggest the UK alone may have lost up to 92% of its historical coverage, with major implications for global ocean health.

Restoring these ecosystems is currently slow and expensive, with active projects in some cases approaching £1 million per hectare. Today’s restoration methods are largely artisanal, manual processes that have barely changed in 50 years, relying on divers and volunteers to collect and plant seeds or seedlings by hand, which cannot scale to meet the rapidly growing demand for marine habitat recovery and compensation.

Robocean is revolutionising seagrass restoration with robots that streamline the entire process from seed to sapling. Their Meadow Maker platform enables multi‑hectare seagrass projects to be delivered rapidly, operating up to 100 times faster than current manual methods at a fraction of the cost. Meadow Maker is designed to plant seagrass in any required quantity, density, and depth across a range of coastal environments, so partners can tailor restoration layouts to ecological goals, regulatory requirements, and site conditions.

Robocean leverages its technology to empower existing restoration programmes, unlock new strategic ocean regeneration initiatives, and deliver industrial‑scale marine compensation measures for coastal and offshore developers. Its technology has already been deployed with partners in the UK and Europe, and Robocean is planning further expansion over the next year as demand for scalable, engineered restoration solutions grows. The company works alongside governments, environmental groups, and energy companies to turn high‑level ocean ambitions into practical, deliverable projects on the seabed.

Robocean was founded by University of Edinburgh School of Engineering alumni Niall McGrath (CEO) and Joe Ralphs (CTO) and has been previously supported by Edinburgh Innovations through their Startup Summer Accelerator Programme and Venture Builder Incubator. These programmes support staff and students who want to explore the business potential of their research to transform their idea into a thriving startup. They enabled Robocean to refine their business narrative and strategy, gain access to investors and financial support, and win several awards, further validating their progress and growth.
