Sonny Charles, who has shaken up the drinks market with his Tipple Box startup, has been named Rising Star at the prestigious 2017 WeDO Scotland Awards.
Tipple Box sends customers everything they need to make a perfect cocktail – including instructions – on a monthly subscription basis. It has shipped more than 20,000 cocktail-making kits since Charles created the company with LAUNCH.ed’s help in 2014.
“I am delighted to be recognised by WeDO as the 2017 Rising Star. It is a real honour to have been selected by such a select group of esteemed WeDO judges,” said Charles at the awards event on 24 November.
Charles graduated with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences in 2013, having been supported throughout his degree by LAUNCH.ed to develop his business. His firm has three full-time employees.
He says: “LAUNCH.ed gives you that initial support which is fantastic when determining if this is a good idea. It also gives access to facilities you didn’t think of and teaches you things like cash position, balance sheets, and access to workshops.
“LAUNCH.ed makes you challenge your business idea and gets you to think it through.”
Tipple Box has attracted much media attention since its creation, including making ‘best of’ gift lists published by Buzzfeed, Metro, the Independent, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar.
WeDO Scotland is a membership organisation for transformational business owners and leaders. The chair of the 2017 awards panel was Stuart Hunter, co-founder of Advance Global Recruitment. He said: “The calibre of entrants was extremely high again this year, highlighting the fantastic talent, innovation and variety of businesses across Scotland.”
